Caring for your Skin in the Summer

Summer is right around the corner, and each of the four seasons has different effects on your skin. When the weather gets warmer and the sun starts to blaze, humidity increases; thus causing your skin to produce more oil. This can lead to breakouts, a common skin condition associated in summer. Sensitivity to the sun can also cause wrinkles, visible signs of aging, dark spots, and more.

Read up on our recommendations for caring for your skin during the hottest season of the year:

Have a Good Skincare Routine in Place

Having a consistent  skincare routine is key for maintaining healthy skin, regardless of the time of year. Think of a daily skincare routine as a sort of foundation, setting your skin up to take on the day.

Step One: Cleanser

Purify your skin with La Beauté's Multi Cleanser. It cleanses the skin with coconut-derived surfactant and natural sugars that deeply hydrate while protecting the skin’s natural barrier.

Step Two: Toner

A toner’s job is meant to gently refresh your skin without stripping it of its natural moisture, preparing your skin to drink up any other skin treatments that you may apply. (Our B+H Essential Toner is great for this!)

Step Three: Serum

Serums provide much-needed ingredients to your skin. Serums like the Pearl Activating Elixir, nourish and soothe moisture-deprived, sensitive, and irritated skin, and help reduce wrinkles and  reduce pigmentations.

Step Four: Moisturizer

Moisturizing helps reduce skin dryness and provides your skin necessary protection.  If you are looking for a moisturizer, try our Orchid Q10 Face Cream – a fan favorite that will calm, soothe, and replenish hydration for problem skin. It’s also gentle enough for sensitive skin.

Keep your Skin Hydrated: Use Antioxidant-Rich Skincare

During the summer, it is common for your skin to become dehydrated. If you are looking for antioxidant-rich skincare, we have a few options like Olecea's Pearl Activating Elixir (great for hydration), Hemp + Vitamin C Glow Face Oil (nourishing and replenishing), and Botanical + Hyaluronic Acid Mask (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial benefits).

If you are already using antioxidant-rich skincare products, you can also eat citrus fruits, green tea, and other green vegetables to get the vitamins and antioxidants you need for skin health. Be sure to also drink enough water each day (a recommended half your body weight in ounces) - your skin will thank you!

Exfoliate

In the summer, your skin will lose a lot of its moisture and become dehydrated. When this happens, you may notice a lot of dry skin, especially if you have frequent sun exposure. If this dead skin remains on your face, it can end up clogging your pores, thus causing frequent breakouts. Be sure to use an exfoliator to remove the dry skin, and follow with your skincare routine.

Wear Sunscreen & Minimize Sun Exposure

You need to wear sunscreen year-round as the sun is always there, although maybe behind some clouds. Apply your sunscreen before makeup, and apply sunscreen multiple times throughout the day, especially if you are active. If you are swimming outside, be sure to apply sunscreen multiple times, as sun exposure is amplified due to the reflection of the water.

The sun is notorious for causing a whole host of skincare problems, like premature aging, wrinkles, sun spots, and of course, sunburns. Wearing sunscreen and minimizing sun exposure (like wearing a hat or staying in the shade) is in your skin’s long term benefit.

Avoid Heavy Makeup

In the summer, when the weather is hot and humid, you may notice that you are sweating more. Wearing excess makeup, combined with the sweat and the humidity, can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Wearing minimal makeup, exfoliating, wearing sunscreen, and avoiding excess sun exposure can help prevent this.
